Solar Watering Systems
May 20, 2009
Many producers have recognized the importance of a quality water source for their grazing livestock. Equally important to managing the upland grazing areas are the management of the riparian areas. Producers are now installing alternate watering systems to preserve the quality and stretch the quantity of water available to the grazing herd.
Alternate water systems and controlled crossing areas are critical management tools for the preservation of riparian areas. Riparian areas are defined as “the lands adjacent to streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands, where the vegetation and soils are influenced by the presence of water”. By providing an alternate water source, we are able to encourage growth of vegetation in the riparian area while maintaining the integrity of the water source, and reduce the effects of traffic on the water edges. The riparian area acts as a natural filter to ensure quality water for livestock use.
When considering an alternate water source, solar power is usually the most cost effective, easiest to install, and requires the least amount of maintenance. Solar pumping is a natural match for our summer grazing periods as our extended daylight hours result in large amounts of water pumped when livestock demand is at the highest. Producers have several options when it comes to planning a system. A stationary mount can be used with a fixed structure or one can use a tracking structure that increases the water pumped by about 25% by allowing the system to utilize more sunlight. There also is the option of using a battery storage pack or running with additional storage tanks to allow for 2-3 days of stored water.
UFA offers the Affordable Portable water design which allows your entire system to be portable and move to various locations. The design of your system will depend on the size of herd being watered and your water source. Stop by your local UFA Farm and Ranch Supply stores to get assistance in planning your water system.
Take advantage of the current “Going to Grass” promotion until May 30th, 2009 which allows you to save dollars as you plan for all of your branding, fencing and forage needs.
